History of Fort Fisher Aquarium
Fort Fisher Aquarium is built on a historic sight. Fort Fisher was a confederate battleground in the Civil War back in the 1800's when the North had a blockade on the south's ports so they could block supplies. The battle at Fort Fisher was one of the first in United States history to be fought by land, sea, and air. Fort Fisher protected the vital port of Wilmington, until it
fell to repeated Union attacks in January of 1865. On the grounds of Fort
Fisher lies a state-of-the-art branch of the North Carolina Aquarium. The Fort Fisher Aquarium was established in 1976
and continues to promote awareness, understanding, and education about the
aquatic life. The aquarium was built in 1976, but was closed in 1999 for
remodeling. In 2002, it reopened after adding a new building.
